Cathy June Arneson has lived in Southern California all of her life enjoying nature and the outdoors, gardening, camping, and hiking.
Taking classes in art whenever possible throughout the school years, Cathy’s fine art studies were set aside while raising her family. Creative pastimes, however, continued to be an important part of her life, from photography, to sewing, cake decorating and home crafts. She also enjoyed sharing arts and craft activities with her children and watching their creativity and artistic skills develop.
As time went on she returned to her love of drawing portraits, mostly in colored pencil or charcoal and signed up for a class in quick pastel portraits at the local college. There, she learned that she liked the way pastel covered more quickly. She then took private pastel portraiture class by Gloria Thomas and learned the beauty of layers of colors and painterly effects that can be achieved with pastels. She was hooked from that point on.
Cathy finds pastel is a joy to work with because of its velvety texture and rich color. Along with that, it’s versatility and archival qualities make it her medium of choice since the mid 1990’s.
“I am fascinated by the way light shapes and defines an object or scene and gives new life and color to the ordinary. It is a privilege and a pleasure to submerge myself into a subject and try to capture that moment in time when all the elements of light and form, color and composition first captured my attention.” ~ Cathy June Arneson
